What is a VAT Number in the Netherlands?
You typically need a Netherlands VAT number if you:
Import goods into the Netherlands
Store products in Dutch warehouses
For example via Amazon FBA, a 3PL fulfilment centre or a local warehouse
Sell to customers in the Netherlands
From another country under your own company name
Use Amazon FBA or marketplace fulfilment
Especially when your stock is stored, moved or distributed through the Netherlands
Use the Netherlands as your EU entry point
For importing goods, reclaiming import VAT and distributing stock across Europe
For some cross-border e-commerce sales, you may also be able to use the One Stop Shop, or OSS, to report EU VAT in one country. However, OSS does not replace a Dutch VAT number if you store goods, import goods or have local VAT obligations in the Netherlands.
Dutch VAT Number for UK and Non-EU Companies
UK and non-EU businesses may need a Dutch VAT number when selling, storing, importing or distributing goods in the Netherlands. This is common for companies using the Netherlands as an EU entry point, working with Dutch warehouses, or selling through Amazon FBA and other online marketplaces.
Since Brexit, UK companies are treated as non-EU businesses for VAT purposes. A Netherlands VAT number helps your business charge Dutch VAT where required, reclaim eligible import VAT, file VAT returns and stay compliant with Dutch tax rules.

The Dutch tax authorities will require you to submit VAT returns quarterly (or sometimes monthly or annually) depending on your turnover and business structure.
Even if you have no sales in a given period, you are still required to file a VAT return. Late or missing filings can result in penalties or additional scrutiny from the tax authorities.
