When Are the Triman and Info-tri Required?
Household packaging placed on the French market generally requires the Triman symbol and the applicable Info-tri instructions. The Triman indicates that sorting rules apply. It does not mean that the packaging is necessarily recyclable.
The Info-tri explains how the packaging and its separate components must be sorted or returned. The marking must normally appear directly on the packaging or on an attached label. Household glass beverage packaging is exempt, although the marking may be used voluntarily.
The Triman and Info-tri do not replace your French EPR registration or Unique Identification Number.
Which Version Should You Use?
Choose the Info-tri that corresponds to the packaging actually supplied with your product. Every component that can be separated during normal use must be shown. Components may be represented using approved pictograms, French text or both. Multiple components are separated by a plus sign.
Depending on the available space, the artwork may use a horizontal, vertical or grouped layout. The grouped layout may only be used when packaging components go into different collection streams.
The packaging Info-tri must not be used for electronics, batteries, textiles or other EPR categories, but can be used alongside eachother. Electrical products require their own French electronics Info-tri symbols.
Standard and Compact Versions
Use the standard version whenever sufficient space is available. The Triman must be at least 10 mm high in this version.
Use the compact version only when space is limited. The compact Triman is 6 mm high and must not be reduced any further. There is no maximum size, but all proportions must be maintained when enlarging the artwork.
The Triman and Info-tri must normally form one adjoining block. Do not distort the artwork or change the approved collection pictograms, text, typefaces or proportions. Body text must be at least 5 pt and letter stems must be at least 0.2 mm thick. The clear area around the Info-tri must equal three times the thickness of its border line.
With a coloured Info-tri, the Triman should normally remain black. A monochrome version may use another colour if sufficient contrast and legibility are maintained.
When Should You Use the Export Version?
Use the export version when the same packaging is marketed in France and at least one other country. Use the regular French version when the packaging is marketed only in France.
The export version must include the country code FR to show that the sorting instructions apply to France. It may use pictograms, French text or both. A translation may be added where appropriate.
Other country codes may only be added when exactly the same sorting instructions apply in those countries. A combined multi-country marking must be black and white because waste stream colours can differ between countries. If the sorting rules are different, separate country-specific instructions are required.
The export version does not automatically meet the recycling labelling requirements of the other countries where the product is sold.
Very Small Packaging
When the largest side of the packaging has a surface area below 10 cm², the Triman and Info-tri may be provided digitally if no accompanying document is supplied.
When the largest side is between 10 cm² and 20 cm², the Triman must still appear physically, but the Info-tri may be provided digitally. For cylindrical or spherical packaging, these thresholds are doubled to 20 cm² and 40 cm².

Current Legal Status
The European Commission has challenged the French marking requirements before the Court of Justice of the European Union in Case C-249/26. This procedure has not itself removed the French requirements. Continue to follow the applicable French rules until the legislation or a court judgment changes them.
