What Does the Belgium Do Not Flush Symbol Mean?

The symbol shows a person disposing of material into a toilet, crossed out by a prohibition circle and line. It means that the product must not be flushed and should be disposed of with the appropriate waste.

The symbol helps prevent wipes from blocking sewers, pumping installations and wastewater treatment systems.

When Is the Symbol Required in Belgium?

The Belgian Royal Decree of 18 September 2015 covers disposable woven and non-woven wipes, whether or not they are impregnated with cleaning substances, surfactants or cosmetic lotion.

Wipes within the scope of the decree that are not intended to be flushed must carry the prescribed symbol on their packaging. Products intended exclusively for non-domestic use by specialised personnel are exempt from the symbol requirement.

Products presented as suitable for flushing must meet the decree's disintegration and biodegradability requirements. The responsible economic operator must maintain documentation demonstrating compliance.

Placement, Colour and Size Requirements

The symbol must be prominent, clearly visible and legible on the packaging. It must not be concealed by a seal or closure.

The Belgian specification requires:

• A dark illustration on a light background
• A minimum diameter of 1.1 cm on primary packaging
• A minimum diameter of 2.5 cm on secondary packaging, such as multipacks and displays

The supplied artwork uses the prescribed dark-on-light presentation. Do not recolour or modify the symbol without checking that the result remains compliant.

If wording about toilet disposal is added, use the prescribed wording for the applicable packaging language, such as “Niet in het toilet gooien” or “Ne pas jeter dans les toilettes”. The wording must be horizontal, clear, indelible and easy to read.

Difference From the EU SUP Symbols

The Belgian do not flush symbol is not a national-language version of the EU single-use plastic symbol.

Since 24 January 2022, wet wipes covered by Commission Implementing Regulation (EU) 2020/2151 and the corresponding Belgian SUP rules have been excluded from the 2015 Belgian decree. These products must use the applicable EU SUP symbol.
