What Information Is Required on a GPSR Label?
GPSR labelling is intended to make consumer products identifiable and traceable and to ensure that consumers receive the safety information they need.
Depending on the product and your position in the supply chain, the required information can include product identification, manufacturer details, contact information, safety warnings and instructions. If the manufacturer is established outside the EU, information about the relevant EU economic operator also needs to accompany the product.
The exact requirements depend on the product, its risks and the applicable EU legislation. GPSR requirements can therefore sit alongside CE marking, sector-specific warnings and other mandatory product markings.
GPSR Labelling and Your Technical File
Your product label should not be treated separately from your GPSR technical documentation. The product identification, manufacturer information, warnings and safety information used on the product should be consistent with the information documented in your technical file.
A GPSR technical file typically contains product identification, manufacturer and supplier information, a risk assessment, applicable standards, label information, safety warnings, instructions and supporting evidence such as test reports.
If your risk assessment identifies a hazard that requires a consumer warning or instruction as a risk mitigation measure, this should also be reflected in the relevant product information.
Do You Need an EU Responsible Person on the Label?
For products from manufacturers established outside the EU, an EU-based economic operator must fulfil the relevant GPSR requirements. For many non-EU sellers this is an EU Responsible Person, whose required details must be provided with the product and can also be required by online marketplaces. Where Should GPSR Information Be Placed?
The correct location depends on the type of information, the product and the circumstances. Product, packaging and accompanying documentation therefore need to be assessed together rather than assuming that all GPSR information can simply be placed on one generic sticker.
